Nico LonWorks Lighting Control System

LonWorks Lighting Control Networks

We use NICO Technology LonWorks lighting control system. LonWorks™ was pioneered in 1991 and is now supported by more than 4,000 companies worldwide. Around 60 million devices have been installed with Lon technology and manufacturers in a variety of industries including building services, home, transportation, transportation systems, utilities, and hundreds of other applications worldwide have adopted the platform as the basis for their products.

NICO systems use Echelon's LonWorks™ technology as their base communications protocol. NICO’s own configuration software allows easy configuration of stand alone systems, but both our dimming and control systems can be easily integrated with many other leading suppliers of building control services, due to the open systems architecture.

LonWorks™ allows shared networks for HVAC, Blind Control, Lighting Control, Fire and Security systems, with many sources for the majority of components. No interfacing devices are required between these items due to the shared standard network variable sets used by all LonMarked systems. Field cabling is simple using FT10 transceivers, it can be undertaken in twisted pair Belden cables or CAT5 in free topology hence Serial, Star or Branch are all possible. Lon cables are also polarity free. All devices are linked with Logical connections that can be different to the physical network structure allowing for flexibility and adaptability. Stand-alone operation is possible due to the distributed intelligence but also fully integrated building automation systems allowing true scalability. All devices have non-volatile application programs that can be uploaded across the network allowing for future updates with any new features.

With thousands of nodes controlling s lights, ensuring ease of use and reliability was a challenge. However, the NICO and LonWorks™ solution makes operations intuitive, easy, and familiar. Keypads on each floor control lighting for all the Hall, meeting rooms, dinning rooms, bars, SPA, ADD, guest rooms, living apartments, rest-rooms, and corridors on that floor. We may add wall switches in offices to allow users to both dim and switch lights, We may also add presence detectors, hand-held transmitters, or upgrade to telephone and web-browser switching and dimming.

The building is equipped with a workstation running NICO’s lighting control software. This object-oriented tool uses the building’s CAD drawings and displays all lights and lighting control devices in the entire site. It’s as if you took the lid off the building. The software shows if a light is on, off, dimmed, or mal-functioning, and enables the regrouping of switches, allocating of automatic switching sequences, and on, off and dimming functions. Furthermore, NICO’s lighting control software allows lights to be configured in predefined scenes to meet operational requirements.

In the building lighting control channels (light fixture) is attached to LonWorks™ lighting control module which supplies power and enables independent or group dimming and on/off switching. Since the module is a node on the LonWorks™ network, each luminaries is addressed and can be controlled from the BA software workstations or a physical switch to which it has been bound. All physical switches and lighting control devices, including floor control switches, are connected to the lighting control modules.

NICO’s lighting control modules communicate via FTT-10A Free Topology Twisted Pair Transceiver, 78 kbps vertical bus. Each floor is connected to other floors by Echelon i.LON600 Router Core Module. A head-end PC within the hotel tower connects to the LonWorks™ system.

NICO’s lighting control module include 4 channels dimmer 4404L, 10 channels switch 3010L, scene’s control keypad 5006L. These modules enable the system to seamlessly locate and control the breathtaking arrays of lights in every area, all from one keypad and workstation.

Key Benefits

• Simplifies building system controls, fully open and scalable

• Uses logically flat, peer-to-peer architecture (just like the Internet)

• Distributed intelligence - data stored within each module/device

• No reliance on central point or outstations

• No single point of failure, avoids hierarchical control

• Provides convenient access to multiple locations
• Gives design flexibility
• Provides a free choice of suppliers, offers global solutions from hundreds of companies representing over 80% of the building controls market
• Expands markets for services and products

• Systems can be configured, integrated and maintained by third-party integrators

• Simpler maintenance by personnel trained on single open protocol

• Formalized in US, European and Chinese Standards

Smart Lighting Set to Shine at Olympic Village in Beijing

The largest non-competitive venue at the Beijing Games, the Olympic Village has more than 370,000 square meters of apartment space, including 22 six-floor apartment and 20 nine-floor buildings and facilities such as general information centers, meeting rooms, medical clinics, religious centers, restaurants, a library, parking areas and entertainment and leisure centers.

NICO provided LonWorks™- enabled power controllers and analog input modules that control the system. NICO’s lighting control software used to monitor and control the system from a property management center.

There are vast numbers of devices scattered across a large area, serving the many needs of the Village, from beautification to safety to energy efficiency...Because the LonWorks products from our various suppliers integrate easily we were able to install and configure the project in less than two months, helping to ensure that the Olympic Village will open on schedule.
